May 21st Event Update

Guests Chazz Young and Judy Pritchett are on their way to Toronto! Chazz will arrive on Thursday night and Judy on Friday. Judy’s even bringing a little friend along with her… I wonder if we’ll get to meet her little puppy, Louis?

Chazz YoungFriday night – yes, Friday is SOLD OUT! No, you can’t buy tickets at the door for this event. The only way to squeeze a few more spots in for Friday is to register for the “Late Bird” package which includes the full weekend except for brunch on Sunday morning.

Saturday Picnic - As we gear up for this weekend, you might be wondering about this mysterious PICNIC LUNCH on Saturday afternoon. Join us at the Dovercourt House before the classes start from 11:30am to 1pm for some social time! Pack a picnic, hang out and start your social dancing early. It’s going to be a nice little bit of community time. Hope to see you there.

Saturday Night – we’ve received some more exciting items for the silent auction. Check out our updated list of donors here.

Gordon Webster – we are SO EXCITED to dance to Gordon’s band for not one but TWO nights this weekend! Here’s a recent quotation from one of Toronto’s Lindy Hop friends who just danced to Gordon this past weekend:

“Please tell me that the jazz in heaven is as good as Gordon Webster‘s band from last night!” ~ Turlough Myers, May 20th

Sunday – brunch is going to be DELICIOUS. If you didn’t sign up for the full weekend package before brunch sold out, you can still join us at 1pm on Sunday.

Sunday night – Bathtub Gin will be playing at the Imperial!

Are you ready for this?

Prepare yourselves for the 2013 FTW Silent Auction!

Hold onto your hats, folks! You won’t believe the great prizes we have for this year’s silent auction!

silent_auction_2010_2There’s a lot going on over the weekend, with a ton of dancing (obviously), terrific workshops, informative talks, a bake sale of mouth-watering treats, and our famous silent auction. You’ll want to make sure you bring a bundle of bills with you on Saturday. Whether you’ve got your eye on dance classes, art and memorabilia, event passes, tasty treats, gorgeous fashions, music, flowers, or even a haircut or osteopathic treatment, we’ve got something for you.

Frankie Manning FoundationNew this year — items will be on display all day Saturday. Bidding wars welcomed … and encouraged! It feels good to support a cause we all believe in, and if you get to take home some cool loot, all the better! So sharpen those pencils and get ready to pounce!

Save the date! Frankie Tribute Weekend 2013 with Chazz Young & Catrine Ljunggren!

We are thrilled to announce that the one and only Chazz Young, Frankie’s son and dancer extraordinaire in his own right, will be joining us for the Frankie Tribute Weekend 2013! Chazz will be partnering with Catrine Ljunggren, one of the original Rhythm Hotshots and a close friend and dance partner of Frankie’s for many years.

Please mark your calendars for May 24, 25, 26, 2013 in Toronto for this fabulous Frankie Manning Foundation fundraising event!

And thank you again to everyone who participated in FTW 2012. We raised an incredible $8,080.62 CAD which contributed directly to this year’s Frankie Manning Foundation scholarships, sending 4 deserving Ambassadors to the Herrang Dance Camp from locations around the world. The 2012 Ambassadors were from Mozambique, Korea, Taiwan and the USA and all 4 of whom are still in Herrang right now. Other Frankie Manning Foundation programs include children and youth programs and the planning of FRANKIE 100 in NYC in May 2014!

More information about the Frankie Tribute Weekend 2013 coming soon…

Thanks, enjoy your summer, and see you soon!

FTW 2012 THANK YOU!

We can’t begin to thank everyone enough for all of the energy, love and support that came together to make FTW 2012 such an incredible success. Frankie Manning’s spirit was definitely with us in Toronto this weekend!!!

We’re still tallying the final fundraising totals for the weekend but we’re ecstatic to have raised over $5000 for the Frankie Manning Foundation. Exact totals coming very soon! Please click here for more information about the Foundation and you can learn more about how the Foundation is alloting some of those funds in 2012 here

Amazing special thanks to our special guests for the weekend who helped to make this so incredibly special. Norma Miller, the Queen of Swing, truly honoured us with her presence this weekend with her inspiring and memorable talk and book signing. Gordon Webster and guest vocalist Naomi Uyama brought the house down with incredible music on Friday and Saturday nights and both Gordon and Naomi also graced us with excellent Saturday workshops. And it was an absolute pleasure to have Judy Pritchett join us to celebrate Frankie’a legacy and to share the origin’s of the Big Apple with us on Sunday evening.

Thank you also to the great trio who joined us for the Sunday brunch and dance and to Combo Royale who played on Sunday evening.

And of course thank you to all of the volunteers who helped run so well. So much work went into the various aspects of this event and we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. THANK YOU!

Please mark your calendars for May 24, 25, 26 2013 for next year’s celebration of Frankie’s 99th birthday!

Sincerely,

Mandi & Chachi

The 2012 Frankie Manning Foundation Ambassadors

Toronto’s big Frankie Tribute Weekend is quickly approaching, and it’s exciting to also be able to share the winners of this year’s global Frankie Manning Foundation Ambassador scholarships!

3 fabulous winners have been selected. They come from 3 different global locations:

  • Taiwan
  • Mozambique
  • Orange County, CA
The recipients will be sent to the Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden to study and then take what they’ve learned back to their communities to share.

The Foundation is also sponsoring youth programs, sending some teens individuals to Beantown and to the International Lindy Hop Championships.

It’s very exciting that our event in Toronto is able to help with funds that go through the Frankie Manning Foundation to support these fabulous programs. Have a look at this video sent in from the Mozambique group. It’s the most incredible mix of African dancing, Lindy Hop and The Big Apple! Frankie would have LOVED this!
